Finding Life Insurance after Obesity

Email

There is a story that I like to share with my clients who are ready to purchase weight loss surgery insurance. About a year ago, I had an interesting applicant who was looking to purchase a term life weight loss surgery insurance policy. This gentleman was being treated for Diabetes Type II with insulin two times a day. After struggling with years of obesity, this young man went through gastric bypass surgery. Prior to the surgery, he had been taken off of all of his meds.  After the surgery his test for diabetes was negative. He had been tested several times since and each result was negative. He no longer had to be treated with insulin or anything else. If you do have diabetes, check out the page: diabetes life insurance.

I consulted some underwriters to discuss the way that an issue such as this could be handled and to my surprise, most had never come across an issue such as this one. They didn’t know how to handle an individual who had been diagnosed with diabetes but no longer had the disease. In the past, individuals who were diagnosed with this disease may have changed their diet and physical activities to a point where the disease was well controlled. When applying for life insurance, their disease may have been classified as well managed. This type of classification may pose obstacles for when individuals with this situation try to get weight loss life insurance.

This issue led me to investigate further.  I attempted to find an underwriter who would be willing to look at the facts and agree that the gastric bypass surgery may have been the reason for the now negative diabetes results and consider the individual as an applicant without diabetes.  This was not an easy task.  I contacted multiple underwriters and made trial offers available to nearly a half dozen companies.  One quote came back that offered a Standard Table D.  Other companies sent back quotes like Table F, Table H and of course declinations.  These companies said they based their decisions on the facts that the individual was obese, he had previously been diagnosed with diabetes, he had gastric bypass surgery and to top it off, two stents were implanted to help manage his coronary artery disease.

It is recommended that when an individual is looking for affordable weight loss surgery insurance, they may want toget quotes from a number of different providers. For more information, visit the article “Compare Term Life Insurance Rates.
