There are some exceptions to having military life insurance such as“Acts of War” injuries that are not covered by an insurance policy. However, there are several programs that offer cheap group military life insurance for members of the Uniformed Services. The Service members Group Life Insurance (SGLI) offers life insurance for military and has coverage for Traumatic Injury Protection. Many service officers get additional private life insurance to supplement this and they are eligible to do so without having to take a medical exam. For a time, some officers might temporarily be overinsured but this is far better than not having insurance at all as the effects can be catastrophic financially and emotionally devastating.

Since the SGLI service ends 120 days after a member leaves the military, many members switch to Veterans Group Life Insurance (VGLI). Others buy their own term or life insurance policy. There is no reason to not have life insurance when you are in the military despite popular assumption. In fact, life insurance is available today for even operatives in dangerous roles like detonation experts!
